Fantastical is the Mac calendar you’ll actually enjoy using.
Last week, we review Fantastical 2 for iPhone touting that is was the best replacement for the iPhone Calendar app. Well, Fantastical for Mac, is the a calendar app that you will actually enjoy using. I know that I am constantly struggling with using the Mac Calendar app. Creating events and switching between views gets to be a chore and I’ve found myself wanting an easier app to work with. That’s when Fantastical comes into play.
Fantastical launched for the first time in May of 2011. The app started out as a school project between its developers and expanded until Fantastical was born. Since that time, it’s been featured in the Best of the Mac App Store (2011) and won an Eddy from Macworld. Fantastical is globally recognized and fully localized in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.
Fantastical for Mac, like the iPhone version, uses a natural language engine to set events within your calendar. For example, you can type in a phrase like, “Interview next Thursday from 11:30 to 12:30pm,” and Fantastical will translate that into a traditional calendar event. This is wonderful if you are working on the phone and need to set an appointment quickly. Instead of taking three or four steps to create the event, you simply type in the information once. You still have the regular options for alarms, notes, start and end times and specific calendars as you do in the Mac Calendar app.
Fantastical for Mac is a utility app that works with other calendar applications like Calendar, iCal, BusyCal (cloud calendars only), Entourage or Outlook. It allows users to set up events, reminders and sync between all devices running Fantastical. Some of the top features of Fantastical for Mac include:
- An event/reminder list that allows you to plan easier
- Past events fade to gray letting you focus on upcoming events
- Customize the number of events you want displayed
- Click events to show important details
- Event addition to new or existing events
- Searching instantly to locate your events
Fantastical provides a clean, elegantly designed calendar app for Mac users. I’ve been using it for the past several days and have enjoyed it immensely. In addition to the natural language recognition for events, you can also open the utility with a shortcut keystroke that can be set up in the app’s preferences. This is extremely helpful and adds to productivity.
Fantastical for Mac currently retails for $9.99 and in my opinion, it is work every penny. Fantastical provides a much easier format to work with your calendar than the native Calendar app does and it works flawlessly with its other companion apps.
