eelo, a mobile OS and web-services, in the public interest is now on Kickstarter

Gael Duval, Mandrake Linux creator, just launched a new campaign on Kickstarter to fund his latest project, eelo. Eelo is a mobile operating system and associated web services (email, cloud storage, online office tools) that is meant to be an alternative to iOS and Android. The Kickstarers is designed to fuel early MVP development. The goal of the crowd-funding campaign is to raise $29,668 (USD) by January 20, 2018.

eelo will be for everyone, with a better respect of his personal data privacy. eelo is an open source, and non-profit project in the public interest.

The reasons for the Kickstarter are as follows:

eelo needs to bootstrap the project and pay some developers for a few months to reach a first “privacy-enabled” and viable eelo product that users will be able to install or order on quantity-limited pre-installed eelo smartphones. It will be a usable product:

– a mobile operating system with new default applications and new UI

– basic web services (search, cloud storage, settings recovery) integrated

– updates for 3 years or more, with full respect of user privacy.

Then they will be able to attract more contributors and the project will become naturally sustainable and we can iterate to new releases.

The Kickstarter launched yesterday and has already raised over $6,000 (USD).
