Droppin’ Santa brings 8-bit gaming fun to the holidays.
Christmas is my favorite time of the year. This is the one time of year I can sit back and enjoy the blinking lights and buy gifts for others to enjoy. During the day I find myself humming holiday tunes and at night, I sit down to watch what ever christmas movie happens to be on TV.
With that said, I was introduced to Droppin’ Santa. This iOS app is for both the iPhone and iPad and has no in-app purchase to ruin the fun. Maybe it’s because I was born in the time of 8-bit gaming, but I love the old style games and DROPPIN’ SANTA is an 8-bit retro Christmas game for iOS and Android mobile devices. The developers seems to take the 8-bit serious as they have designed their website to look like an 8-bit game. I LOVE IT.
When starting the game, you’re presented with a ‘bad person’ (i.e. the Grinch) and 8-bit text explaining that someone is trying to ruin Christmas. You can save Christmas by helping Santa deliver presents. To play the game, you tap and hold A (the bottom left-hand corner) to fly and tap B (the bottom right-hand corner) to drop presents. Sounds easy, doesn’t it?
The games controls might be simple, but getting a high score might not be as easy. When playing, you will find that you start off with three Reindeer and each time Santa gets to close to a house or when a green fireball (inspired by the ‘Hadoken’ from Street Fighter) hits you, Santa’s sleigh loses one of its reindeer. Once you’ve lost all three, your game comes to an end.
The developers have a very addicting game on their hands with the fun 8-bit graphics and sounds. The song used is “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” is done in the Chiptune style and it definitely puts me in the mood for the holidays.
There is one thing I’m not a fan of and that’s the pop-up that asks you to download random apps when your game is over. I dislike in-app purchases and even though I understand developers have to make an income in some way when they give away free apps. I do appreciate that the pop-up is not overwhelming and only shows up when you lose.
I’ve not been able to get past 21 on the score board so I can’t tell you if the game ever changes or if the song and scenery stays the same. I’m assuming that it’s a lot like Flappy Bird where the goal is just to keep going and going.
It’s a fun game that costs you no money just your time and being it’s the holidays I would recommend grabbing it.
