CloudMounter successfully fuses local storage and cloud-based storage into Finder.

Have you ever just sat back and thought about how impressive our modern smartphones, iPads, and MacBooks truly are?  Then think back to the Apple IIGS and remember that 1.125MB Ram and 256 KB ROM was mind-boggling and top-of-the-line.  Even though there are a lot of users who still operate on the Gigabyte scale, many of us are now operating in the Terabyte level and remarkably some in the Petabyte zone (1024 Terabytes).  As our digital media continues to expand, storage becomes ever more important.  More specifically, Apps like CloudMounter by Eltima Software become essential.  With a good internet source and a handy app, Eltima created a digital hard drive fusion.  Quickly access your local and mounted cloud storage in a single location.

CloudMounter App
Many of us use cloud-based systems like DropBox, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, etc.  As an Apple fan, I enjoy each of the apps and intermittently jump between the web-based platforms and the app-based ones.  I love the functionality of accessing my data on my iPhone X, iPad Pro 10.5″ and my MacBook Pro.  It is incredibly convenient to offload data from my devices and to store it in the cloud.  Each of the listed options provides free and premium levels of their services.  For example, Google Drive will give you 15 GB free, OneDrive 5GB, and Dropbox 2GB free.  I love that Dropbox incentivizes you to complete tasks and to invite friends.  This mutually beneficial system will allow you to quickly gain more space with referrals.  There are limitations to each of the services, but the competing ecosystems have allowed for improvement, enhancement, and innovation.

Comparing the costs of the services, you will find that they are pretty similar in price and benefits.  1TB of Dropbox space will run you $99 per year.  You can upgrade Google Drive to 100GB for $19.99 per year or 1TB for $99.99 per year.  I love that Google Drive provides you with the highest level of free storage, but we must share this space between GMAIL, Google Drive, and Google Photos.  Unfortunately, I have used nearly 3GB of my free 15GB on my GMAIL account alone.  Microsoft OneDrive will allow you to upgrade beyond the 5GB to 50GB for $1.99 per month or the Office 365 +1 TB for $69.99 per year or Office 365 (5 computers) + 5 TB per year for $99.99.   The point of this review is not to provide a pro/con list for the various Cloud services, but I felt that this was a very useful bit of information to add.  The benefit of CloudMounter is it enhances each and all of the services by giving you more access to the services you may already pay for.

The app is touted as that must-have app for “laptop users with lower-capacity SSD-drives.”  The premise of the App is that it can mount your online cloud sources as disks onto your computer.  You can mount the folders cross-platform and access the cloud storage accounts on both Windows and Mac devices.  This system helps you to utilize and navigate through your data in Google Drive, DropBox, OneDrive, Backblaze, Amazon S3, (S)FTP, WebDAV, and OpenStack Swift.  To download the CloundMounter app, you can either navigate to their website, or you can navigate to the iOS App Store.  After you download the App, you will be taken to a “Connections” panel.  From there you can link a Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive and the other options.  To start, I added my Dropbox account.  Select the Dropbox Icon, and this will open up a Dropbox to CloudMounter link panel.  Log in to your Google account or your email/password combination.  Complete the double authentication (if you utilize this feature), and then the drive will be located to the left panel.  Select “DROPBOX” to the left, and you will be taken to another app panel.  Select “Mount” along the bottom right to complete the process.  Select your other cloud storage and mount the drives as well.  Setup was incredibly easy and quick, and I did not experience any hiccups or issues.  I really did not have any need for FTP, FTP with Implicit SSL, FTP with TLS/SSL or SFTP as I do not build/manage websites, nor do I care about remote access to my MacBook Pro.  You can use these systems to directly mount FTP or more secure servers.

You will notice an icon along the top of your MacBook that looks like a cloud above a mountain.  If you select this icon, you will be able to add a “new drive” and return to the panel as listed above.  You can choose each of the cloud storage options that you previously added, and then a side menu will allow you to unmount, encrypt, show in finder, edit, keep extended attributes, or delete.  You can adjust the preferences of the app to launch at system login, automount at application start, keep extended attributes, and/or send anonymous usage statistics to Eltima.  Lastly, you can choose help, or you can Quit the CloudMounter entirely.  Once the folders were mounted, I was then able to navigate to the finder and see my Dropbox/Google Drive folders in the finder list.  This is where the magic of the App was found.

The CloudMounter system will allow you to drag and drop folders/data etc. from your desktop or another location directly to or from the cloud mounted drive.  To test the transfer rate, I transferred Robin Hood.avi (734mb) to DropBox in 8.38 seconds.  I was able to select the file from the Dropbox mounted drive, and then I selected command + Delete, and the file was deleted immediately.  I moved the file from my desktop to the Google Drive folder in 7.29 seconds.  I was able to open files within the DropBox and GoogleDrive drives, and I did not experience any lag, my computer never froze.  The thumbnails were immediately accessible and then I was incredibly impressed with the drag and drop ability that the app provided to me.  As a plus, the data for each of the services was not stored on my computer hard drive, saving me space.

CloudMounter Mount
The CloudMounter App was initially released on 07/12/16 and has had regular updates over the past two years.  CloudMounter 1.1 was released 09/06/16, followed by CloudMounter 1.2 on 11/7/16, CloudMounter 2 on 4/24/17, CloudMounter 2.1 released on 6/13/18, and CloudMounter 2.2 on 10/12/17.  CloudMounter 3 released 12/13/17 and added services like,, and  CloudMounter 3.1 released 01/09/18 and the most recent update CloudMounter 3.2 released on 3/19/18 (Build 3.2.523).  This latest update allowed bookmarking in finders favorites tab, allowed you to choose a folder cache on a different drive, and improved the upload speed on BackBlaze B2.  Each of the steady updates added functionality, improved the experience and worked towards a perfect cloud/local hybrid.  I often will briefly scan the updates before dropping money on an app.  In this instance, I was impressed with the rate of enhancement.  Observing the progress and the improved user functions with time, I can

CloudMounter uses advanced data encryption, finder integration, and regular updates to give you more access to your data and to keep your data safer from prying eyes.  Cloud/remote server files are encrypted so that if someone accesses your data, they will only see a garbled mess.  Add a password, and then choose if you want everything encrypted or just the new files.  The password Integrates with macOS keychain, keeping all your password data secure.  During the 15-day-free-trial period, you can connect to as many accounts of each service as you may need, which drastically increases your total disk space.  However, the free app will only allow you to use one of each service.

CloudMounter Drives
This is one of the Apps on the App Store that I did not know I needed it until I heard about it.  The download and setup were incredibly easy, and the speed that I was able to mount the drives for use was uncanny.   When I perused the updates, I was able to see that the cost of this app was worth the benefit it provided to me.  I do caution the company from “literally” Kardashianing the English language.  For example, the website states that the CloudMounter software receives “Constant updates.”   Does this literally happen constantly?  My wife’s biggest pet peeve is the misuse of the words constantly and literally.  I had to chuckle a little when I read this line on the website.  I was excited to find out that CloudMounter did not store login credentials of the added connections, rather the passwords were kept in the macOS Keychain.  I like this app and feel that it enhances the benefits of Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, and Dropbox.  I would rate the app at 5/5 stars.  The App has been out for two years, and there are numerous reviews of the app from 2016.  There have been a lot of updates since that point and the version that I tested over the past two weeks, version 3.0, is night and day improved from the original version.  I would recommend that you check out the app on the iOS App Store.
