Chatlight provides soft, flattering light for webcam videos.
One of the most frustrating issues with video chats is the lighting. You either have to position yourself under just the right overhead light and hope it doesn’t make you appear pale or try sitting right next to a window hoping it doesn’t make you look like you’re recording on the surface of the sun. There just aren’t many ‘good’ options out there for webcam lighting – except Chatlight.
Chatlight is the first light made specifically for video chatting that’s rechargeable. It’s designed as an adjustable clamp light so that it will slide onto your devices with ease. It fits nearly all devices that you would use a webcam on and has fully adjustable brightness and direction. The bulb is designed to last 50,000 hours (a standard incandescent light bulb is designed to last up to 1,000 hours only). It also has a battery life of about 90 minutes and will recharge in about 15 minutes.
When I first heard about Chatlight, I was ecstatic. I work with a lot of remote employees and we utilize video chats quite a bit. I thought, “This would be great to use for that!” Chatlight comes in fairly simple packaging. There is a small cardboard wrapping around a clear plastic interior package. The inner plastic portion slides right out. I was very impressed with this design because I didn’t have to fumble with the pacakging. Inside the packge you find the Chatlight, a Micro USB charging cable, small self-adhesive Velcro strip. There is no user guide or even a Quick Start guide, which I’ve found a lot of products ship with these days.
The Chatlight comes with some charge on it and I was able to turn it on immediately. There are two power levels on the light – low and high. The Micro USB charging port is located next to the power switch and there is a small LED power indicator light on the light bulb side. This only let’s you know when it’s turned on. The device itself is very lightweight, which some might see as cheap, but I see it as beneficial because it won’t weigh you down if you are using the light with a tablet or lightweight computer. The back panel is spring-loaded and opens up to about 1-inch wide. This accomdates for most webcam capable devices in the market. The lightbulb rotates a full 180º – from bottom to top.
Use of the Chatlight is pretty easy. You just pull the adjustable back apart so that it will slide down on top of your computer (or other device). I used my MacBook Pro and Facetime as the example. You will see that the first photo is quite grainy and the light from above and behind my head doesn’t really light up my face. The second photo, I had turned the Chatlight on and while it’s not perfect, it’s a lot better than without the light. My face is lit up and the image has a lot less noise to it. The background falls off naturally and it’s just a much better image that without the Chatlight.
In my opinion, this is a great accessory for anyone who uses video chat on a regular basis. You can always look your best with very little hassle at all.
