CES 2017 Go Puck Interview

Go Puck enhances Portable Power by allowing you to have wearables/mountable options.

CES 2017 was an amazing experience.  It is exhilarating to attend the show, to attend media events and to tour the 2.47 million square feet of show space.  With nearly 3800 vendors, there is a lot of opportunities to test, to review and to interview.   The largest problem and likely the most important issue at the show was keeping our devices charged.  I personally carried 4 portable batteries with me while at CES.  My colleague had his DSLR and spare batteries in addition to his iPhone 7 plus.  I was lucky to maintain 50% power through the show, while tethered to batteries.

One of my favorite batteries has been the GO PUCK 3X (4400 mAh), named for its ability to charge the iPhone 4S three times on a single battery charge.  The battery is capable of 1A input and has double outputs 2.1A and 1A.  The battery came with an active mount, which allows attachment to your backpack strap or to a thin belt/lashing.  It also has a 1/4″ screw hole to attach to standard tripod screws.  It is incredibly convenient to have power, where you need it.  I have used this battery for over 1 year and has served me well for the past 2 CES trips.

I was previously aware of the 3X and the 5X (charges a iPhone 4S five times), the active mount and the Go Puck Pouch.  This year, Go Puck brought a newer, larger battery and better mounting options.  The Go Puck 6XR is a 9000 mAh battery, which will provide 4-5 charges for the iPhone 6s or seven charges for a GoPro Hero 4.  The battery is capable of 5V, 9V and 12V input at 1-2 Amps.  There are dual output ports, a quick charge port capable of 5V 3.6 A output, 9V 2A out and 12V 1.5A output and a second port at 5V 2.4 Amps.    The quick charge port is a Qualcomm 3.0 port, which allows for rapid charging of android devices capable of QC charging.  Interestingly, the Go Puck is able to charge via QC 3.0 as well.  This would allow the battery to charge to 80% in just under 40 minutes and to full at under an hour.

A battery is great, but is not worth anything if you cannot have it with you, when you need it.  The active mount has been useful but is not the most ideal for my Veho Muvi camera.  This year at CES I was able to interview Diego with GoPuck and to learn more about their new battery and the pro mounts.  Previous systems would allow you to integrate your camera into your rig.  Now you can plug your GoPro or your Muvi directly to the battery and enjoy the markedly enhanced battery life. Clip it to your lashing on your bag or you can attach it to a neck lanyard.

You can purchase the 6XR Battery from gopuck.com for $99 and pro mounts currently sold for $20-30.  I am really excited for the 3 new mounts, the 2 finger, 3 finger and quick release.  With these options, you can customize the battery rig to your liking.  I really look forward to the pro rig mounts and to the freedom they will provide.  I know they will further enhance my CES 2018 experience.  If you are an action cam enthusiast or you capture life with your iPhone, definitely consider having at least one of these in your arsenal.  At 7.5 ounces, for the battery and the action mount, just about everyone can afford baggage space for a Go Puck battery.
