Don’t head back to school without proper app support.

In the past couple of years, I’ve noticed that some of the best study tools include the apps that are right on our phones. There has been a huge push from iOS developers to create apps for students to use for studying as well as entertainment. Here are some of our favorite options for iOS apps to help students start school on the right foot this year.

1Password

This is definitely a MUST HAVE for anyone — not just students. With this app, you have the ability to create incredibly secure passwords and manage them within a locked app. In addition to it being a secure place to create and save passwords, you can also store other information like private notes and software keys. 1Password is available for Mac and iOS and will sync across your devices.

1Password – the world’s most secure and easiest to use password manager. 1Password keeps you safe online by locking away your passwords, credit cards, identities and any other information in a secure vault – all protected by the one password only you know.

Fantastical

For years, I have used the standard Calendar app that comes with iOS. I don’t find it substandard, but sometimes I want more from my calendar experience. I found Fantastical and absolutely love using it. It’s a beautiful app that has a really intuitive interface. You can use common language like, “Lunch with Audrey at noon on Saturday,” and Fantastical will input the appointment. There are several outstanding features to this app, but with it, you are sure to not miss any appointments or assignments for classes.

The fast and friendly calendar and reminders app, packed full of features to make you even more productive.

PDF Expert

Not too long ago, I was working in a job that required me to review PDFs multiple times a day. I found that viewing them in preview mode wasn’t enough. I couldn’t make comments or annotations. PDF Expert gives you full control over your PDFs. It’s an amazing app and I can see students getting a lot of use out of it since there are a lot of scholarly articles that are viewable as PDFs. You can make notes and highlight passages easily on your iPhone or iPad.

From the first document you select, PDF Expert springs into action with smooth scrolling and fast search. Instantly open PDFs, whether they are just small email attachments or 2000-page reports.

Scanner Pro

This app is literally like having a scanner in your pocket. Using the camera on your phone or iPad, you can scan photos, documents, business cards, or any other important document. You would never have to worry about losing a class syllabus again. Once you receive it from your teacher, you can scan it, store it in your document library, and even make notes on it in PDF Expert. One of my favorite features of this app is the OCR text recognition option. You can scan a document and have the app create an editable text document. It’s a very easy app to use and it can be used for many different purposes.

Scanner Pro allows you to scan paper documents into PDFs that look clean and professional. It is time to replace huge hardware scanners with the mobile PDF scanner.

Ginger Page

Even the best writers need help with proofreading. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve read over the same paragraph and missed a very simple error simply because I had read it so many times. That’s what Ginger Page helps with. It’s an English grammar and spell checker. It also works as a translator for over 60 languages. The app will detect problems with spelling, sentence structure, punctuation, and word use.

Square Cash

Square Cash makes transferring money from person to person a breeze. I remember having to wire money to a friend once from Western Union and it was just an expensive pain. Let’s say you are away from home and you realize that you need some extra money for a lab fee or books. You can send mom and dad a message using the app letting them know the amount you need and what it’s for. Then they can send it directly to you from their bank account. The money can then be ‘cashed out’ to your account, or used instantly with the Square Cash card. It’s a very useful app and wonderful for sending money securely.

RoboKiller

RoboKiller is an iOS app that frees you from the phone game. The app reduces unwanted calls by blocking numbers that are identified as spam callers and it does it automatically. It is essentially a filter for all your phone calls to go through. Once the incoming call number is ‘cleared’, the call will go through to your phone and you can answer it like normal. When you’re in school, you don’t need the extra stress of spammers and telemarketers interrupting your study time.

Dropbox

With more and more teachers wanting to distribute materials electronically, a cloud-based storage system becomes an important tool for you to keep close by. I’ve been using Dropbox for years and it’s still considered a standard for me. I will use it to pass documents back and forth between my personal computer and work computer. What’s great about it is that the documents are stored in ‘the cloud’ and you don’t end up clogging your email system up with large files. Dropbox has been very reliable to me and I love being able to access my files on my phone as well as my desktop.

Evernote

When I was in school, I would say that 75% of it was taking notes. I was always a better learner if I hand-wrote notes because I associated with subjects better that way. That said, I now take a similar approach with typing on my iPad or iPhone. Evernote is a really great option for note-taking because it affords you the flexibility to take notes on your phone and be able to edit them on your iPad or laptop computer. You can store images and email contents inside notes and you can even add audio tracks, too. It’s a very helpful app for education.

SwiftKey

Even though I am pretty fast when it comes to typing single keystrokes on a digital keyboard, I really like having the ability to swipe across a screen and form words in a fraction of the time. I wasn’t sure if I was going to like SwiftKey at first, but now that I’ve been using it for almost a year, I can’t think of any other way to interact with my phone. It really is the fastest way to get your thoughts onto your device. What’s great about it is that it’s a keyboard extension so you can use it with any app. It makes grabbing quick notes from a teacher or writing out full assignments much easier on your iOS devices.
