Keep your USB-C powered devices at-the-ready with 63W of power. Enjoy more than enough power to rapidly charge a tablet+phone or even a MacBook/Laptop.

I just finished the Audible version of “Fahrenheit 451,” by Ray Bradbury, and was shocked with the uncanny similarities to our modern world.  As more of our devices turn to USB-C charging, we require expanded options to maintain a proper charge.  With an always on-the-go, always plugged-in, tech-hungry lifestyle, our demand for data surges upward.  Unfortunately, many of our homes were built before the tech revolution.  We have rooms with outlets that are hardly ever used and others that may border on fire hazard.  We have piles of cables from USB-A to USB-micro/mini, USB-A to Lighting, USB-A to USB-C, USB-C to USB-C, USB-C to USB-micro and USB-C to Lightning.  So far, I have relied upon power strips, surge protectors, and several power-hubs to maintain power.  However, as the challenge intensifies like the levels of Tetris, a power-cord-Tetris, I seek to expand/replace my wall chargers.  My basic requirement is that a single wall port must provide power for at least two devices.

AUKEY Focus Duo 63W USB-C PD Wall Charger REVIEW

I have many Apple Charging Cubes, but the single output port tends to be both inadequate and wasteful.  Luckily, devices like the AUKEY 63 W Dual-Port PD Wall Charger will provide a good charge, and without the need to shell out a hefty premium. The charger arrived in a tan 4 1/4 inches long by 3 3/4 inches wide by 1 5/16 inches thick package.  The cover provided the company name and “63W Dual-Port PD Wall Charger” title along the top left, and a 1 7/16 inches wide by 1 1/4 inches tall inked-outline image of the charger along the bottom.  Examining the four side panels, I found that both the front and back panels were left unadorned, while both sides displayed a recycle icon and “GO GREEN WITH AUKEY.”  The bottom panel provided the PA-D5 model number, the company’s Chinese address, www.aukey.com address, support@aukey.com support address, and several of the typical manufacturing labels.  I lifted the front flap and found the plastic-wrapped charger resting within a cardboard cubby.  Beneath the cardboard, AUKEY provided a 2 1/8 inches wide by 3 3/8 inches tall 24-month product warranty card and a 3 1/8 inches long by 2 inches tall Hexa-lingual instruction manual.

The instruction manual was well-received, allotting five pages to each of the six languages.  The first page provided a list of the package contents, a diagram of the two USB-C (PD 3.0) ports, and an appreciation paragraph for their customers.  The second page proved to be the most useful of the five, displaying a two by eight table of product specifications: Model PA-D5, PD 3.0 technology, USB-C Output 1 18W PD 5V/3A, 9V/2A, 12V/1.5A, USB-C Output 2 60W PD 5V/3A, 9v/3A, 12V/3A, 15V/3A, 20V/3A, 63W maximum, 67x64x29mm (2.64”x2.52”x1.14”) dimensions, and 148g/5.22oz weight.  Pages three and four added a short paragraph detailing Power Delivery technology, the need for a USB-C capable device/cable, and a quick step-by-step how-to guide.  To enjoy the 63W power, remove the 2 1/2 inches long by 1 1/8 inches wide by 2 5/8 inches tall black dual USB-C port charger from the thin opaque bag, deploy the foldable type-A prongs on the rear side, and then plug the device into a Type-A or Type-B wall socket. You will notice that the wall prongs are not centralized on the back. Rather, they are offset, which will allow you to angle the device downward when in the lower port or to flip it upward when using an upper port. This design should prevent you from losing the second wall outlet. Next, obtain a USB-C to USB-C, USB-C to Lightning cable, or USB-C to micro cable, and plug it into either of the USB-C PD ports on the AUKEY wall charger. Lastly, plug the other end of your cable into your smartphone, tablet, or computer.

To test the output of the device, I inserted a DROK USB-C Multimeter into the USB-C port and then the USB-C cable into the output port on the DROK Multimeter.  Using a USB-C to Lightning cable, I placed my iPhone 11 Pro Max onto charge at 6:03 am at 7% and found the multimeter read 9.16V/2.57A.  I tried both of the USB-C ports and found both to output the same amount of power.  By 6:14 am, my phone was at 28% charge and by 6:32 it was at 57% charge.  Previous tests with the iPhone XS/XS Max, XR, and iPhone 11 series phones showed rapid charging could provide 50% power in 30 minutes.  This AUKEY charger provided the appropriate amount of power to duplicate the fast charging scenario.  By 6:36 am, my phone was at 60% power. By the time I showered, shaved, and dressed for work, my phone had 53% power.  Personally, I was rather impressed with the power supply.  When I plugged my USB-C to USB-C cable from the charger into my iPad Pro 11”, it read 15V/2A.  I charged my iPad for about 10 minutes and found that the battery percentage increased from 9% to 24%.  I was happy with the ability to provide 30W to my iPad Pro 11” and with the ~18W for my iPhone 11 Pro Max. Several similar tests were conducted, all with similar results. Additionally, I alternated the configuration of charging, changed which port I used for each device, and found no difference.

I was pleased with the design of the device and with the above tests. The retractable type A wall prong allowed for increased portability and reduced the chances of snagging the mesh lining of my backpack. I liked the matte black surface color and the use of orange highlights around the USB-C ports. Looking closely at the device, you will find “AUKEY” etched into one of the sides of the charger. The opposite side panel, top panel and back panel, like the packaging, did not have any markings. The lower panel displayed the product specifications, as outlined in the manual. Throughout the tests, the charger did not appear to increase in temperature, did not change shape/warp, and worked as advertised.  The instruction manual was well laid out and the inclusion of the six language options was generous.  AUKEY continues to surprise me with the quality, durability, and reusability of their tech.  If you have not visited their website, I highly encourage you to check out the Focus DUO 63W PD Dual Charger and many of their other device.
