August Connect provides secure remote access to your home.
August is a company who has impressed me with its Smart Lock for home automation. The August Smart Lock started with only the option to use Bluetooth to unlock your door. This meant you had to be within a certain range to open your door. This is actually a great feature because if power goes out you can still lock and unlock your door. August even lets you send invites to people you would like to let in your home while you are away. Unfortunately, there is a downside. What if the person you send the invite to doesn’t have a smartphone?
The great team at August thought about this and came up with the solution – a small adapter called the Connect. “With August Connect, August is expanding the range of functionality for our users, delivering new experiences around secure, intelligent access to the home,” said Jason Johnson, CEO and co-founder of August. “While the existing Bluetooth connectivity in the August Smart Lock allows it to be a truly offline, independent device, August Connect enhances that core offering with new benefits such as real time and WiFi Internet connectivity.”
The Connect plugs into a power outlet and joins with the August Smart Lock via Bluetooth and also connects to your wireless router. This gives you the ability to connect to your Smart Lock from anywhere. My grandmother doesn’t have a smart phone so I can unlock the door for her when I’m not home and now when your grandma comes to visit you can unlock the door while away to let her in your home, too. The Connect does needs to be in close proximity to the August Smart Lock. It must be within Bluetooth range so try to find an outlet no more than 15 feet away from your Smart Lock.
Setup of the Connect was an absolute breeze. I plugged in my Connect to the outlet, tapped on “wireless” inside the August iOS app. The app took me through a quick setup process of choosing my wireless network and then an option called Remote Connect appeared on my August app. If I’m slightly out of range of Bluetooth or clear across town, I can now tap the Remote Connect and unlock my door. It really is that simple.
What else is nice about the connect is that because it’s connecting the August Smart Lock to the WiFi you have more options to integrate it with other home automation products. Last night when I left home and locked my door, my August asked me if I would like to turn my Nest Thermostat to “away.” Once I said, “yes,” my home’s thermostat changed to “away” and then the Nest actually powered my Philips Hue light bulbs off. Being able to work with other home automation gadgets is a better user experience than just working with one at a time. With the Smart Lock and now the Connect, August has certainly knocked the boring old deadbolt out of the park.
I try lots of products and this one is a true winner. Anyone looking to smarten their home should start at the front door by securing it with an August Smart Lock and August Connect.
