A5+ Wireless is my favorite desktop speaker system ever
For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted a really great set of powerful speakers for my desk setup. I’ve been eyeing a set of speakers from Audioengine for a really long time and I finally had the option to review them — the A5+ Wireless Speakers.
While at CES 2016 I happened to experience Audioengine’s speakers for the first time. After that, I had a deep obsession with the A2 speakers Audioengine sold. As I said above I had always wanted an amazing set of speakers for my desk that I would blast the wonderful sounds of music straight into my ears. Finally, in 2018 I was given the chance to check out the Audioengine A5+ Wireless. I can tell you it was worth the wait. I can’t imagine that any other speaker system would make me smile the way the A5+ Wireless do.
The A5+ Wireless Speakers are an updated version of the popular A5 Powered Speakers. The basic design of the speakers is the same as their predecessor, but they have wireless capabilities. Audioengine prides this speaker set on the fact that they are not just speakers — they are a complete music system. A left and right speaker are included in the set, but not a subwoofer. I can recommend the S8 Powered Subwoofer from Audioengine as an add-on (I’ll discuss my personal experience with it a bit later).
The A5+ Wireless Speakers have enough power to easily fill any size room. They are built with custom components including Kevlar woofers (5″ woofers with advanced voice coils), silk dome tweeters (3/4″ with neodymium magnets), high-fidelity Bluetooth aptX-HD, and built-in power amps wrapped in hand-built 1/2″ thick MDF cabinets with a furniture-grade finish. Audioengine provides gold-plated connectors and a solid aluminum remote control. The A5+ are bookshelf-style speakers (2.0 active) and can fit nearly anywhere. They have a 150W peak power total for output and 115/240V, 50/60Hz input voltages. The speakers give you the option of connecting to them wirelessly without the hassle of network setup. You also have the ability to connect old-school analog devices — like turntables — directly to the speakers through RCA input jacks. You can also input audio from the 3.5mm stereo jack.
The A5+ Wireless speakers are designed to work with any and all operating systems and streaming services. They will also work with all Audioengine digital-to-analog converters and wireless audio adapters. The speakers come in three different finish options — black satin, hi-gloss white, and solid natural bamboo. Audioengine really prepares you for installation by ensuring that you have all the tools needed. Here is a list of everything that’s included in the box with the speakers.

Before I really get into my personal experience with these speakers, I want to make a point to say that I’m hard of hearing. This can make it very difficult for me to enjoy audio even through the very best of speakers. Sound just isn’t the same to me as it is with other people. I do have hearing aids that help tremendously but I don’t always use them when I’m working at the computer. Therefore, I seek out the best of the best audio equipment to ensure the best possible audio quality. I felt confident — based on my personal experience with previous Audioengine speakers — that the A5+ Wireless would allow me to have the best possible opportunity to hear things as well as possible. I was not disappointed.
Since the day they have arrived I have found myself playing more music while working. Before I would be sitting at my desk writing or editing and before the day was over I would realize I had forgotten to pull up iTunes and play my music. The second I sit down I wake my speakers up and start the tunes. Something I would like to mention is the A5+ Wireless have a nice foam bottom that allows them to sit flat on your desk without rattling. Audioengine sells desktop stands called the DS2 that work great at angling the A5+ speakers and dampening vibration. I happened to go with a set from ISOAcoustics no matter what you decide from keeping them flat or using one of the two options above they A5+ Wireless will sound wonderful. I’m a fan for life after my experience with them.
Once I get these powerhouses setup on my desk I placed an order for the Audioengine S8 White 8-inch Powered Subwoofer in white (as mentioned above) to match my beautiful A5+ Wireless speakers. I know I sound like I’m gushing over the speakers and you would be so right. Until you hear the sound difference that these put off well you just haven’t truly done yourself a favor. The speaker put out a great, full sound, but I really wanted the added bump from a subwoofer, so I placed the order and now my office feels complete.
If after reading this you have to ask me if these speakers are something I would recommend, well then you might have been reading something else. The A5+ Wireless are the best sounding speakers I’ve had the pleasure of listening too. They are made so that even the most finicky audiophile would enjoy. From the glossy high-end finish that you want to display to the Kevlar woofers that push that high-end sound straight into your ears — these are speakers that anyone would benefit from owning well as long as you enjoy the sound.
