APEMAN Sports Action Camera REVIEW

Awesome, affordable option for active videographers.

I was exposed to ‘action’ cameras at a young age. At that point in time, it meant a personal camcorder that was the size of a VCR that was strapped to your shoulder while you rode a motorcycle. Or, a studio size camera that you held between your legs as you careened down hill on a sled. You see, I grew up in a news cameraman’s house. My dad was a news videographer for many years before he started his own video production company.

On top of his professional career, he is also a motorcycle enthusiast. There was no shortage of adventure in our household, that’s for sure. He was always finding unique ways of captureing action as it was happening with just what we had available. When the GoPro cameras emerged as a new cateogry for video, he was estacitc and sought one out immediately. As a video professional, he could easily justify the expense of the premium action camera option, but for personal users, spending $200 or more on a minuscule camera usually isn’t in the budget. Fortunately, other companies have started pushing out their own action camera products like the APEMAN Sports Action Camera.

The APEMAN Sport Action Camera has a pretty impressive feature set. First of all, it shoots in full 1080P HD video. The camera has a 14MP lens with a CMOS-sensor, which rivals most smartphone AND DSLR lenses. And, there is a 170-degree Ultra Wide Angle lens that helps you to grab your entire field of view rather than just a portion of it. The camera body has simple controls with a 2-inch LCD display screen, which allows you to view real-time HD photos and video as you are capturing them. The  APEMAN Sport Action Camera comes with an impressive collection of adapters and arrives in a waterproof case. The case protects the camera up to 30 meters (approximately 98 feet) deep.

TESTING
In testing this remarkable little camera, I found that it’s battery life was a little lacking. For example, I left it on charge overnight and the battery was full. I didn’t use it right away and when I cam back to it a couple of days later, the battery was discharged. When it’s fully charged, you will get a little over an hour’s worth of shooting time. I would love to have a battery charger adapter so you can continue shooting or have a replacement battery included with the package. Also, the camera will not work without a Micro SD card inserted. There isn’t one provided with the purchase so you will have to supply one. The camera accepts up to a 32GB size card and with it shooting HD video, I would suggest getting more than one Micro SD card at that size.

The camera along with its accessories is quite impressive. It’s a very sturdy camera body even without the heavy-duty waterproof case. I decided to use the camera as a dash cam to test out the video quality and the overall stabilization of the camera. It worked beautifully. Our city is known for its need of road repairs and so it was a bit of a bumpy ride. I felt APEMAN Sport Action Camera handled the ride along well and I got some really neat video.

One feature that I was very impressed with at this product’s price point, was the fact that it connects to WiFi and will allow you to view your camera footage in real-time through a smartphone. The app is free to download (I tested the iOS version) and easy to follow. I didn’t have much issue with the camera connecting. I would find this very useful if you are using the APEMAN Sport Action Camera as a remote camera on a production. If you are the camera op or the director, you could easily call up the camera’s footage to see what its seeing. Now because its a WiFi connection, you are somewhat limited to distance, but if you are within that area, you should have a pretty good opportunity to direct from afar.

CONCLUSIONS
The APEMAN Sports Action Camera is a great option for sports enthusiasts and active people alike. It’s great for capturing those exciting moments in life from the eyes of the user. It’s very affordable does a great job of recording video from some pretty extreme angles. If you are looking for an action camera, you should give this one from APEMAN a look.

Do you know of a way to continue recording through the app without leaving my phone’s screen on? Whenever my screen shuts off it stops recording. This is gonna kill my battery! (Using zSanycam with a Galaxy s6)

Try and format the Micro SD card. If its a new one it should work.

But if not just insert your Micro SD in a SD Holder and format using your PC or Laptop

Hey 🙂 I just got this for my son and I too couldn’t get the SD card to work. However, as was mentioned above it needed to be formatted. I turned the cam on, went into the settings, then to factory settings ( just for safety) and reset it. Then went to format and said yes to deleting everything on the card. I shut it off and turned it on.. boom it was working! Good luck to everyone.

I don’t know for sure, but it looks to be very, very close. I’ve actually used some GoPro accessories with it it and they seem to work fine for the most part. The only thing you might run into a little problem with is the waterproof cases for the camera itself. But the attachments and mounts will probably work fine.

You should be able to connect to the camera with your phone through the app. You first download the app, press the upper key of the right side, then look for the wifi connection available, and select it. All of the WiFi settings for the camera are controlled through the app and it’s really only used to connect the camera and the phone together so you can use the phone as a viewing screen.

      Hi Elise,

Unless there is something that I’m not thinking of, the files recorded by the camera should be stored on the Micro SD card in your camera. The easiest way I’ve found to get those files onto my computer is to eject the card from the camera and insert it into a USB card reader. Then, I put that into my computer. The card reader appears as a hard drive on the desk top and you should be able to pull the files over. Hope this helps!

Did anybody have a problem with the camera not switching off. Mine does from time to time and you need to press the Mode and the OK simultaneously for a while to get it off. Contacted the supplier and they suggested formatting the card (does this make sense?). This would overwrite my videos (although I realise I can save them to elsewhere). Any advice from anyone?

I’ve had this problem when scrolling through my videos on the camera it seems to get stuck and won’t do anything. I have had to remove the battery to turn off. I wonder if the card has corrupted as if I scroll througg in the other direction there will be video that I know should be there but it says no file on the screen.
I have tried reformatting the card and happened again today.

Want to get this for my son. I don’t understand why wifi is required to video? So if you are out of your wifi range you would use your smart phone as a hot spot? I’m not tech savy so I don’t understand why you need wifi at all. Is this iPhone compatible

Wifi is only needed to view streaming on phone, or to transfer videos across. Video is recorded on the inserted SD card.

I’m trying to use a 64GB micro SD card however after trying to format the card through the camera it seems to be stuck on the ‘please wait’ screen for quite some time. I understand you’re meant to use a 32GB card but I’d like to have the extra space. Any tips on how to get the 64GB card working?

I’m struggling to be able to download images and videos, have tried using the SD card in a PC but won’t allow me to see full size images, just a few lines of the picture at the top of the screen, also tried to download using the app but I’m having the same issue. When I have the thumbnail icons on the PC or computer I can see the full thing, just not when opened up. Has anyone had this issue? Or know of a way I can download the full size picture/images fully?

I’m struggling to even view my media taken by the camera, I’m currently away and trying to film some skiing. I use the normal procedures to film and take phobos, and then during lunch I’ll use the play back option to see nour file. When I put the SD card in my tablet or connect to the app I can see all the files where my media should be but none of themy can be played. Afterms formatting the card and the camera separately I am able to view a few photos all 3 ways mentioned by then it just reverts back to doing what it did initially. So far I’ve been skiing 3 days and only managed to get recording of our hotel room whilst I try to get it to work. Any HELP?

It’s nothing to do with the class of card – it’s a menu option which is on by default when the camera ships. To change this, go to Setup menu (press mode button to cycle through modes: video rec / photo rec / playback / setup) then using up/down key select cyclic record & choose ‘off’.

Tom – I cannot start timelapse on my a80 either. Tried everything. Video works fine but as soon as I select a timelapse interval, I go to video mode and see the timelapse icon – then I press OK and nothing happens – formatted card, tried new battery, nothing. If you find out please let me know! Thanks!

Hi All, So sorry if these questions have already been asked above but I haven’t had a chance to read them all.

My husband bought this for me as a present, I turned it on a few times and recorded a few test videos then realised the sd card which came with it is only 64 mb so I’ve just purchased a 64 gb one. as soon as I put it in it says ‘please insert card’ then I asked on amazon someone said format the card. I went to options and format then all I see is ‘please wait’ on the screen and it was like that for over an hour and half then I thought it got stuck and turned it off. despite charging the camera fully it’s not switching on now. I can see a blue light on the side but it doesn’t switch on? What’s wrong with it or am I doing something wrong? Many thanks indeed.

it’s doing this because of the 4gb limit of fat32 it can’t deal with more than the 4GB, Nothing is lost all you need to do is join the clips,.. Not a fault of the camera just limits on file size from fat32

I am an avid mountain biker, always trying to find new trails to challenge myself on. I enjoy recording my bike trail feats. I used a gopro for the last three years but I found the lack of battery life unnerving. I decided to roll the dice and purchase the AKASO Brave. The Brave is a gamechanger this little camera did what I thought no camera could do. I get perfectly clear shots and a battery life to rival and old school nokia phone. I use the AKASO for all of my life adventures. The remote is a lifesaver too so I can make sure not to record my wipeouts. Get this camera you will not regret it.
    Thanks,
