User Experience

Years ago, when I was just a youngling, I was a super fan of Alienware. They were the brand I always wanted. I never did get one back then due to the price, but here I am years later, and I have one in hand! I’m blown away by the power and performance of this laptop. The 16-inch Alienware Area-51 dropped about seven months ago, so we are a bit late to this review party, but I wanted to give all you readers who shop for deals on laptops before the new models come out a heads-up on this device.

Initial Impressions

The laptop has a solid build and doesn’t have much, if any, flex in the chassis. The screen is 240Hz and 500 nits but feels like it’s much brighter than that. You can lift the lid with one hand, and Windows Hello works well. The 16-inch model has plenty of ports to work as a nice desktop replacement, but the USB-A ports are Gen 1 and seem very slow. This is extremely disappointing for a laptop that costs nearly $3,500.

The Area 51 has an Ethernet port, HDMI port, three USB-A ports, and 2 Thunderbolt 5 ports, along with an aux port for headphones. The model I have came with the Intel Ultra Core 9, NVIDIA RTX 5080, 2TB of storage, and 32GB of RAM. It’s a beast and was made for gaming and to last a long time.

Performance Enhancements

After running benchmark tests on it, I decided I needed to remove the bloat that is forced on users by Microsoft. I ran a tool called Winslop. This app allows you to remove things like Cortana, OneDrive, Edge, Copilot, and more. After running the application, I noticed the performance of the laptop seemed to skyrocket. It wasn’t bogged down by the bloatware and telemetry that Microsoft forces on users.

I highly recommend Winslop if you want to clean up your system, but be careful as it can completely wreck your system if you don’t do things the right way. Make sure you always do a backup of your system’s data before running any software that could cause issues.

Customer Support

One of the areas we like to test with high-end equipment is the responsiveness and efficiency of their customer support. How easy is it to get in touch with support? With a human? How quickly do you get a response if there is an escalation? These are the areas that we think are important when it comes to choosing a premium laptop, because even the most powerful system can become frustrating without reliable assistance. Prompt, knowledgeable support ensures issues are resolved quickly, minimizing downtime and helping users get the most out of their investment.

Alienware was acquired by Dell in 2006 and has been outsourcing their customer and technical support to countries outside the U.S. such as India since 2001. While this is a common trend with technology companies, I was still surprised at how many hoops I had to jump through when I needed assistance.

I had a somewhat minor issue that I wanted to reach out to support for so, I tried the online chat option. I ended up being caught in a Möbius loop with the virtual assistant. It would not connect me to a live agent no matter what prompt I gave it.

So, I tried to call. The only phone number listed on the contact page for dell.com is for Sales. I tried it anyway and it took me several automated messages to get to a human. When they did answer, I could hear a busy call center in the background. And when I say busy call center, I mean, I could understand what other operators were saying because they were talking so loud. The first person I talked to had to transfer me to a different department and then that person had to put me on hold. Before transferring me again. When I finally got to talk to someone about the situation, she told me that she would be my point of contact, but she was going to be out the next two days. She assured me that my issue would be handled and also gave me the contact information for her manager since she would be out.

A few days went by and I never heard back from her. Well, I waited four days and when my issue hadn’t been resolved and I hadn’t heard anything from them, I reached out to the manager. The manger was also out and in his voicemail says to contact someone else. I tried to reach that person with no luck so I left a voicemail and I never received a call back. It’s been more than two weeks at this point and still no response. I am still so shocked that not only did the issue not get resolved, but that there has been no follow-up after an issue was escalated and that my ‘dedicated’ customer service rep never reached back out. Luckily for me it’s a minor issue and I was really just wanting to test and review their customer service. For someone who needed real help they would have been completely out of luck.

Dell makes the automated call system such a pain that I truly believe its sole purpose is to make you hang up before reaching a human.

Conclusion
