One of the most important pieces of equipment for gaming is your choice of headphones. They can make or break you when it comes to games like Call of Duty. I’ve spent many hours playing matches with sub-standard headsets that allow opponents to sneak up on me. That’s how I learned, the hard way, to invest in strong headphones that are comfortable, easy to use, and have flexible controls across platforms. With that said, I was eager to test out the ROG Delta II headset.

User Experience

I’ve used many different types of headphones — both for gaming and for listening to music and other media. Because of that experience, I have a fairly broad knowledge of how headphones should work and what the best features are. I’ve narrowed it down for this review, starting with connectivity.

Connectivity

Users have the option of connecting with the provided 2.4 GHz wireless adapter, Bluetooth, or through a 3.5 mm cable. I primarily used the Bluetooth connection, but didn’t have any issues with the wireless adapter or the cable connection. One of the things I really like about these connectivity options is that the user has separate on/off switches for them. If you want Bluetooth, you power on the headset using the Bluetooth button. If you want the 2.4 GHz option, you flip the on/off switch and tap the 2.4 button just above it. One thing I noticed, though, when using the headset with my MacBook Pro was that the volume control for the microphone controlled my system volume instead of the volume wheel. That was a weird anomaly since the volume wheel controlled system volume when connected via Bluetooth.

Audio Quality

I found the audio quality to be above average. The place where I lost a little bit of quality was with the bass. Highs are very crisp, and I can easily understand vocals in songs, speech in movies, and sounds in games, but I feel like, out of the box, the headphones lack some boom from lower sounds. There is an EQ in Armoury Crate that can be used to adjust the headphones, but I like to provide an ‘out of the box’ evaluation since that is the starting place.

Microphone Performance

I love the detachable microphone. It is there when you need it, but not in the way when you don’t. The microphone has a flexible gooseneck on it so you can easily bend it out of the way when you need to, but it’s nice to be able to detach it altogether if you are just listening to music or just not playing with a team. I’ve received no complaints about microphone clarity from others, but one person mentioned I sounded a bit nasally, which might have been due to other reasons. I used the microphone in an isolated area, so it’s hard to tell how well it would perform in louder environments since it doesn’t include any AI noise-cancelling.

Comfort and Build

The headset is very comfortable to wear. The ear cups are large enough for my ears to rest comfortably inside and not get overheated. The entire headset is lightweight, and I didn’t notice any issues with headaches or earaches after using it for long periods of time. An extra set of ear pads was included, which I thought was a very nice touch. The headset feels sturdy. I don’t know if it would survive being slammed down repeatedly, but with standard use, they should have a long life.

Additional Thoughts

One of the things that I appreciate is that ASUS offers customization through its Armoury Crate software. You have the ability to adjust audio levels using the EQ, change the RGB colors, and apply side tone inside that application. The issue I have with this is that Armoury Crate is resource-intensive, and it’s only available for Windows. While that in itself isn’t an issue, the fact that this headset is marketed for multiple platforms is a problem. Let’s say that I planned on using this with my PlayStation and iPhone only, and I didn’t have a Windows computer. I would invest more than $200 in the purchase, only to discover that certain features were locked behind Armoury Crate, which I didn’t have access to. If the headset were only for Windows but happened to work with other platforms, that would be a different story. At the very least, ASUS should consider releasing a mobile version of their software so people could make adjustments.

Conclusion

The ASUS ROG Delta II Wireless Gaming Headphones offer a strong combination of versatility, comfort, and performance. Their standout feature is the tri-mode connectivity, which provides broad platform compatibility and smooth switching between devices. Audio is detailed and crisp, although the bass could use a bit more power out of the box. The microphone works well for casual and team play, and the comfort level makes it ideal for long sessions.
